Our Story

Resplendently spanning the corners of Little Mary Street and Capel Street, Slattery’s Bar is one of the social and cultural icons of Dublin’s rich licensed heritage. There has been a licence here since 1821 when Capel Street existed as one of the most important trading thoroughfares in Dublin. In that year publican John McKenna acquired the first licence at what was then No. 126, and steadily built a thriving drinks trade. This pub was closed for a period in the 1850s during which time major reconstruction works took place. And by 1860 the name above the door here was Fortune & Co, Wine and Spirit Merchants.

GIN PALACE

In 1870 this old hostelry emerged as Hanna & McClure’s, Capel Street’s premier Gin Palace, following a major Victorian refurbishment. The architectural effects of that renovation remain visible today courtesy of the magnificent exterior ornate stucco façade and the arched Victorian first floor windows. Slattery’s acquired its famed 7am opening licence in 1892 to accommodate the enormous trade emanating from the newly opened Dublin Corporation Markets on Mary’s Lane.

P&W Slattery

The Irish War of Independence was in full swing when this old shrine of antiquity entered the ownership of one of Dublin’s most revered licensed families, the Slattery Brothers. But soon the Irish Civil War and the Battle of Dublin would engulf them. When peace was eventually restored Slattery’s became a thriving social magnet as wave after wave of workers, buyers, dealers, inspectors from the Dublin markets found affinity with this house. In the 60s, 70s and 80s Slattery’s Pub became the social Mecca of the Irish music industry as Ireland’s greatest artists both performed and imbibed here with equal talent and accomplishment. These were the halcyon days of Irish music, song, story, laughter and merriment – and Paddy Slattery became the great facilitator.

This bar borrows its name from the central island centrepiece bar, which, in a former age, was a distinctive characteristic of Edwardian pubs. As you ramble about this rectangular-shaped oasis of allure and hospitality, you are a entering an inspiring world of discovery. If you glance to your left, you will instantly notice the Heritage Wall, which is an authentic gallery of images that illuminate the pages of Irish history. Take your time here and browse about: all the famous political and social figures of Ireland’s past are here.Take particular note of the death cards of the 1916 leaders, and how Ireland’s patriotic women are especially remembered here. Moving further along, you will notice that each side of this bar evokes its own individual sense of ambience and character. There are lots of nooks, crannies and cosy sanctuaries to slip into where you can sit back to your heart’s content with your favourite potion. Once again you will witness how the social history of this pub is narrated along the walls in poetry, image and song.
